Why this slackness in calamitous affairs?

Why such delay in matters, events turn awry,

And to what end the suggestions of false conjectures?

And in the conjectures of deceiving hopes lie?

أظن بأن الذل أرخى سدوله

أظن بأن الذل أرخى سدوله

علينا وأن الشر ضربة لازب

علينا وأن الشر ضربة لازب

I think that humiliation has let down its curtains

I think humiliation has let down its veil,

over us, and that evil is an inescapable blow.

Upon us, and that evil is a blow, no surprise.

فلا تحسبوا الأزمات ضربة لازم

فلا تحسبوا الأزمات ضربة لازم

فما هي إلا زهات الحباحب

فما هي إلا زهات الحباحب

Yet do not deem crises an inescapable blow,

Yet reckon not troubles as a destined blow,

for they are only the glimmers of fireflies.

For they are but whims of sly fox and rabid hound.

فيابن الملوك الصاعدين إلى العلا

فيابن الملوك الصاعدين إلى العلا

أقم على الإسلام غير مراقب

أقم على الإسلام غير مراقب

So, O son of kings who ascend to glory,

O son of rising kings towards glory's height,

stand firm in Islam, unafraid.

Uphold Islam, not merely gazing around.

ولا تستشر إلا هماماً سميدعاً

ولا تستشر إلا هماماً سميدعاً

صديقاً صدوقاً عالماً بالتجارب

صديقاً صدوقاً عالماً بالتجارب

And consult none but a resolute, noble man,

Consult only brave, wise, tested men sincere,

a truthful friend, well versed in experience.

Faithful friends, scholars of diverse life profound.

وإياك والشورى لكل مخذل

وإياك والشورى لكل مخذل

ضعيف جنان طائش غير راسب

ضعيف جنان طائش غير راسب

And beware of consulting anyone who saps resolve,

Beware discussing with each weak, reckless soul,

weak of heart, rash, and lacking firmness.

Feeble of mind, rash, rooted not on ground.

وأكذب ظن الشامتين فإنما

وأكذب ظن الشامتين فإنما

مقامك عن صد العدى غير تائب

مقامك عن صد العدى غير تائب

And prove the gloaters' conjecture false, for indeed

Belie the gloating foes' vile thoughts for your place,

your stand does not turn back from repelling the foe.

Deterring enemies, will never turn around.

وأصدق فعل شاع في الأرض صيتها

وأصدق فعل شاع في الأرض صيتها

وطارت إلى شرقيها والمغارب

وطارت إلى شرقيها والمغارب

And make good the deed whose fame has spread across the earth,

And truest act whose fame the land still sings,

and flown to its eastern reaches and western lands.

Its praises east and west horizons resound.

تطاول منها كل خل وصاحب

تطاول منها كل خل وصاحب

محب لهذا الذي ليس بشالب

محب لهذا الذي ليس بشالب

Every close friend and companion has grown proud of it,

All date palms and their like did covet it,

loving this man, who is no shālib [unclear epithet].

Those who no pure water for thirst have found.

وغاضت أناساً آخرين وأحزنت

وغاضت أناساً آخرين وأحزنت

قلوباص لهم مغموصة بالشوائب

قلوباص لهم مغموصة بالشوائب

And it has angered other people and saddened

It grieved others, saddened hearts overcast,

their hearts, tainted with impurities.

With doubts and qualms those spirits wrapped around.

فإن لم تقد جرد السلاهب في الفلا

فإن لم تقد جرد السلاهب في الفلا

ولم تعد فوق اليعملات النجائب

ولم تعد فوق اليعملات النجائب

For if you do not lead sleek, long-bodied steeds through the wilderness,

Unless you lead the warriors on plains to strike,

and do not race atop hardy, noble-bred she-camels,

Or climb the mountain peaks where gloom abounds,

ولم تفجأ الأعراب منك بغارة

ولم تفجأ الأعراب منك بغارة

تزيل قناع الذل عن كل راهب

تزيل قناع الذل عن كل راهب

and do not surprise the Bedouins with a raid of your own,

Or take the nomads by surprise, your raids,

that strips the veil of humiliation from every fearful man,

Removing the veil of disgrace, tear it down.

ولم تخفق الرايات فوقك نحوهم

ولم تخفق الرايات فوقك نحوهم

تغير عليهم بالأسود السواغب

تغير عليهم بالأسود السواغب

and the banners do not flutter above you toward them,

Or wave your standards o’er them, marching on,

as you raid them with ravenous lions—

With stalwart blacks to strike, turn their worlds around.
