Who races with droop-eared hounds for whom the quarry is coveted.

I say to the rider urging on a swift she-camel,

As though she were a fortress haltered in the mirage:

O rider driving your mount onward,

Folding up far-flung wastes, troubled by dangers,

By God, turn aside to the loved ones if

Fate brings you their way and the high-humped camels imperil you.

No lover is to blame for devotion to the beloved—

Its staff; for the ardent lover's heart is wounded.

Arrogance and self-admiration drive him out of wanton pride.

Then let blameworthy pride and ill fortune give him joy!

And upon his family and companions, then those who follow them,

As long as rain pours down and writing is inscribed on parchment.
