So if it was because of a sin your loving friend committed,

for which I surely deserved estrangement,

why not make that sin plain, so that I might

return to what was approved and reject what is imputed to me?

And if your loving friend committed no sin,

and neither slighted companions nor committed an offense,

then shunning one who offered sincere affection, never tainted

by a blemish, ever—I beg your mercy—is an injustice.

Come, spare us estrangement and coldness—

a ruinous, desolate path, darkened by both.

And I knew you in times past to have affection

firmly established, never tainted by any accusation.

So return to the way of sincerity, for its path—

I beg your mercy—offers better guidance, and its goodness is loftier.

For you have found no hatred in me, nor any coldness

to cite against us as necessarily warranting what you envisage.

And if it is neither this nor that, then what

I deem prudent for you is to abandon what you sought.

Is it fitting, in the judgment of a person who loves,

to prolong estrangement with no fault imputed?

So why not write with a greeting, and return

with the purest salutations, which dispel misgivings

and sow affection in the soil of hearts?

And through estrangement they may remain ailing and wounded.

And my heart was not petrified like smooth rock

by the force of coldness; rather, it grew clear and became like water.
