You upheld the banner of truth; justice upheld you.

So tyranny's haunt grew distant, and justice rejoiced.

    Your virtues civilized God's creatures,

Restraining a lion's paw when a male ostrich provoked it.

What a sultan you are, scion of great men,

His throne supreme, his word decisive!

What life-giving rain you are, through your Lord's mercy,

Overflowing, untouched by shortage or stinginess.

His forbearance tames the lions of al-Duʿaysa,

And birds frightened by arrows find comfort in him.

    وعالمها هامٌ وأنت لها عقل

    You are as a spirit, and creation as lifeblood;

Its people are heads, and you their mind.

The Russian has indeed claimed that you are unjust,

Yet under you the lion cub does not attack the lamb.

Let the king of Russia examine his country's condition,

And render a judgment that reports do not belie.

Is it under the House of Osman, or in his country,

That the sharecropper and calf are sold along with the field?

They are demolished—which sovereign, then, deserves the credit?

The protected non-Muslim fled when he entered—

Wallachia; the child was bereaved of his forefathers.

Had the protected non-Muslim felt the palm of his justice,

He would have settled, and no hooves would have trampled his homes.

Let the king of Russia know that our rights

    With you are those of Muslims, however exalted they may be;

And that the protected non-Muslim's blood is spared among you,

As the Creator commanded and the messengers firmly ordained.

Your food is lawful for us, and our food

For you; what binds you binds us, without excess.

Your Lord fashioned you content with what He gave you,

You shun lands, most of them overtaken by drought.

So he mistook you for a coward, wary of his sword,

Though your sword is God's sword, without equal.

His rude, harsh envoy deluded him

Into thinking the Muslims' lands were his to take,

As though sandgrouse could overcome the Turks' falcons,

Or an ibex could subdue the fierce lion.

Camels have vied with gazelles in fragrance.

The swallow of caves sang like a nightingale, and honey was made

By their spiders; the mule urged the horse to hurry.

So it befitted him that his messengers go unheeded.

At you, but nobility cast them back at his threshold.

By my father's life, Menshikov is not wise

Enough to shun a war that reason condemns.

You called to God's religion with a sincere man's call,

Defending the upright faith and sparing no effort.

Face, with spear and blade plunging through them.

Melting Russia's mountains, cloaked in snow!

And what a champion of ardor you are, Napoleon,

Whose solicitude is truth, dispelling falsehood!

May there endure for Napoleon, the lion of his age,

And his neighbor Victoria, abundant honor.

And may you endure, Commander of the Faithful, upheld,

Through you the world is safeguarded, and the people take pride.

Let reproach of the sword cease: your sword is a lover,

And reproach does not enter lovers' ears.

And whoever is loyal to you cries out, victorious:

May you flourish and live! Today unity is restored.

    وملكِك والجيشِ المنازلُ والنفل

    To your sword and fire belong the foes and their souls;

To your realm and army, the dwellings and the spoils.
