قامتshe rose تسترveiling بالمنديلwith the kerchief طلعتهاher face
قامت تستر بالمنديل طلعتها
وفوقand above غرتهاher brow البيضاءwhite إكليلُa crown
وفوق غرتها البيضاء إكليلُ
She rose to veil her face with a kerchief,
She rose, cloaked in her veil, her radiance revealed
And above her white brow was a crown.
Above her white neck, a garland her tresses concealed
فقلتso I said لاnot يحجبveils المنديلthe kerchief شمسsun ضحىmidmorning
فقلت لا يحجب المنديل شمس ضحى
ولاnor يزيدincreases بياضwhiteness الصبحthe dawn قنديلُa lamp
ولا يزيد بياض الصبح قنديلُ
So I said: A kerchief does not veil the midmorning sun,
"Do not let the veil obscure the dawn's gleaming light
Nor does a lamp increase the whiteness of dawn.
Nor the morning's whiteness enhanced by lanterns bright"
