توارتshe hid herself بالحجابbehind the veil فماyet did not ثناهاhold her back
ولاand did not وارىconceal عنfrom العانيthe captive سناهاher radiance
She hid behind the veil, yet it did not hold her back,
She was veiled, yet nothing could conceal her,
Nor conceal her radiance from the captive.
Nor could her splendor from my eyes conceal.
وكيفand how تغيبvanish ريّاًRayya فيin حجابٍa veil
توارىvanished بالغزالةwith the sun منbecause of بهاهاher splendor
And how could Rayya vanish behind a veil
How could she in a veil herself conceal,
That vanished, with the sun, before her splendor?
When with her grace the gazelle cannot conceal?
بربكماby your Lord, you both سلاهاyou two, ask her عنabout فؤادٍa heart
سلاforgot طيبsweetness الحياةlife وماbut did not سلاهاforget her
By the Lord of you both, ask her about a heart
I beg you both, leave off this constant grief,
That has forgotten life's sweetness, but has not forgotten her.
Forget the bitter past, the cares that sear.
عساهاmay she أنto تعودreturn بهwith it لداريto my home
وتنعشنيand revive me بكأسٍwith a cup منfrom لَماهاher lips' dark hue
May she return with it to my home,
May she come back to me, to my abode,
And revive me with a cup from her dusky lips.
And with a cup, my wasted life refresh.
