O night that left Layla without a breath,
O night when Layla left without my soul
and left me enduring the heat of my breaths.
And left me suffering the heat of my breath

But for you, the sun's light would not have darkened in my sight,
Were it not for you, the light of sun would not shine in my eyes
nor would my lamp have dwelt in the hollow of the grave,
Nor would the darkness of grave envelope my lamp

nor would wine have forsaken my palm, nor sleep my eyes.
Nor would the wind dry my comfort and dim my eyes
And my tears have become my finest wine, and heartache my cup.
And my tears became my drink and sadness my cup

And do not find you among the people

The light of Layla's face lit my lamp
