    O hero, whom I named

a sword to sever the heads of the supplicant's sorrow,

why do I see you have severed the bond of my affection

and stopped visiting me before my pains have ceased?

And I think your apparition has grown as cruel as you,

for it has shunned my beds, O gentle one.

By God, were it not that love for you is my master,

and passion for you, O Abbud, is the noblest intercessor,

you would know how I speak—but I am

a man molded for unbroken fidelity.

If the days of youth returned to me and I lost

this gray hair, my tears would flow over it.
