O dweller in the tomb, the tomb became heavenly bliss

When it held you, and tears became a flood.

And beauty and benevolence departed from a town

Where the people used to call you Hassan.

Where are the loved ones and close friends, O my son?

And where are those I thought were helpers in hardship?

They are gone, and you are gone; the heart remains in burning grief.

Were it to touch rainwater, it would make it flow as flames.

The lightning on high conjures your smile for me,

So it turns my pearly tears to coral.

Whenever I see a group of writers

And do not find you among them, I see them as jinn.

O joy of life, after you life holds no

Life I can delight in, in private or in public.

O finest of people in character, and their staunchest

Protector of neighbors, and builder of glory's loftiest edifice.

Death has now become an easy mount for me,

So I do not fear it, whether it stays away or draws near.

Our best consolation is your piety, O my son,

For it has prepared Paradise as a vaulted hall for you.
