    Nothing was more supple than the branches of the bān tree

    Except your figure, O paradise of my heart.

    Then why has it become, with the Nile among its neighbors,

    Harder and drier than the ghada trees of Najran?

    Turn toward your lovesick lover, if you dislike being seen

    Among humankind as an idol among idols.

    And forsake the one who teaches you to shy away, and turn toward whoever

    Tells you that beauty lies in kindness.

    إن النفار خليقة الغزلان

    By God, you have no teacher in shying away;

    Indeed, shying away is the nature of gazelles.

    And shall I indeed reproach you for it, O dewy bough,

    And gazelle of this human race?

    أفسوء حظي علة النسيان

    No, rather, I see you have forgotten a young oryx's turning glance;

    Is my ill fortune, then, the cause of forgetfulness?
