My two friends, this gazelle knows no fairness:

He hands me a cup, and gives you both a ratl-measure.

And he claims that water is more conducive to healing

Than wine, so that we may not suspect him of stinginess.

So do not reproach me, since his cup has kept its distance,

And I have spurned wine and chosen the dew of his saliva.

Though this is an Ashʿab-like wish,

Conjured by ignorance that fetters reason.

Would my enchanter begrudge cheap wine,

Yet freely give what is sweeter, more delicious, and dearer?

I have accepted him as my master, whether he is generous or refuses,

And whether he angers me or pleases me, comes near or turns away.

For I am only his slave and his captive,

And a slave is not blamed for obeying his master.
