    My lord, may fortune's reversals never alter your days,

    Nor may the ages encroach upon your decrees.

    Nor may a land whose star you are be bereft of you,

    Nor may gleaming swords and armor rise to glory through anyone else.

    Why do I see people's unsold wares now in demand,

    Yet my choicest poems have found no market with you?

    And why does every fool glory in his post,

    While the erudite scholar's station is toil?

    Is every garden nightingale's nest mere wood,

    While every crow chick's is fresh aloeswood?

    راح السرور ومن ناديك ما قربوا

    I truly marvel at people for whom you poured

    The wine of joy, though they never approached your court;

    And at men who alighted at generosity's watering place,

    Yet never drank from bounty's sweet waters.

    Will you not quench their thirst with bounty's torrent,

    As sweet water quenches the burning thirst of one circling it?

    My children's words to their neighbor have hurt me:

    “The promise has not even borne green dates, let alone ripe ones to eat.

    فكيف تنجح لما يحكم العقب

    During the chief's tenure, your aims went unfulfilled;

    How can they succeed when the successor rules?”

    By your dignity, my lord, neither is my son

    Rebellious, nor am I, by the Merciful, a wrongdoer.

    Nor have the words of ill-wishers held back my hand

    From what I intend—but gold has held it back.

    For all my hand possesses is a well-shaped

    Brown reed whose craft is literature and oratory.

    وإن رآها لئيمٌ هزه صحب

    When a generous man sees it, delight stirs him;

    And if a base man sees it, companions stir him.

    Ask, if you wish, about those people who own

    Houses and livestock—where did their earnings come from?

    Have not their stipends equaled ours,

    While we have more dependents, when they are counted?

    This hint suffices me; what keeps me

    From saying more is tact, brevity, and courtesy.

    And you—you are the one whom brevity satisfies,

    The magnanimous, intelligent, skillful, seasoned man,

    والسحب تمسك أحياناً وتنسكب

    And the giver of a thousand in gold, even if you hold back;

    Clouds too sometimes hold back and sometimes pour forth.

    لا يوجد الشكر حتى يوجد السبب

    Dispel my distress with your bounty, and win my praises;

    Gratitude does not arise until there is cause for it.

    The Turks bear witness that bounty belongs

    To you; so favor us, and the Arabs will bear witness.
