فللَه علمٌ باكتئابي ولوعتي
If my yearning is hidden from my loved ones,
If my love is hidden from my loved ones
Then God knows my dejection and burning grief.
Then God knows my melancholy and agony

Though separation hurt my soul and was not appeased,
And if the separation has saddened my soul and left it unquenched
It was enough that my enviers were satisfied when my soul neared death.
It is enough that my enviers are satiated as I'm satiated

Their claims—Layla would—and found fault with my honor.
Their claims, Laila would have blamed me and my manhood been disgraced

By the sanctity of my love for her, I did not seek separation from her,
And her right to my love, I have not ceased to yearn for after her
But the vicissitudes of the nights sought it.
But the nights' circumstances have confused me

And I have not slept except remembering her good faith
And the time of the white nights in al-Azbakiyya.
And the promise of the white nights in El-Azbakiya

When Paradise's wide-eyed maidens are mentioned to its graceful women,
When the eye of heavens is remembered for its beauty
They say, "Our beauties make those maidens needless."
Our beauties say their eyes have been enriched

As though its maidens were in harmony with its groves:
As if its eyelids are plates for its eyes
For its groves never lament without the maidens singing.
So the eyes have not languished except to be enriched
