close to piety, far from indecency,

Close to piety, far from wrongdoing

patient with the coyness of oryx-maidens, never unfaithful.

Patient with the bending boughs, not betraying

يطيع الهوى في كل شيءٍ يزينه

يطيع الهوى في كل شيءٍ يزينه

ولكنه يعصيه في كل شائن

ولكنه يعصيه في كل شائن

He obeys passion in everything that adorns him,

He follows desire in all that adorns it

but disobeys it in all that brings disgrace.

Yet disobeys it in all that is disgraceful

ومثلك للنفس النفيسة فتنةٌ

ومثلك للنفس النفيسة فتنةٌ

ومثلي شهيد المقلتين الفواتن

ومثلي شهيد المقلتين الفواتن

And one like you is a temptation to a noble soul,

And you are, for the precious soul, a temptation

and one like me is a martyr to the two enchanting eyes.

While I am a martyr for the two alluring ones

فحسنك يا أسما ولطفك كامل

فحسنك يا أسما ولطفك كامل

أعيذهما باللَه من عين عائن

أعيذهما باللَه من عين عائن

For your beauty, O Asma, and your grace are perfect;

So your beauty, O Asma, and your kindness are perfect

I seek God's protection for both against the evil eye.

I seek refuge for them with God from an envious eye

تفدِّيك من لبنان كل غريرةٍ

تفدِّيك من لبنان كل غريرةٍ

وكل غرير حول لبنان ساكن

وكل غرير حول لبنان ساكن

May every innocent maiden from Lebanon ransom you,

Every charming one in Lebanon would ransom you

and every innocent youth dwelling around Lebanon.

And every charming one around Lebanon dwelling

ومثلك لو يفدي بخيلٍ ومهجةٍ

ومثلك لو يفدي بخيلٍ ومهجةٍ

فدتْك وربِّي مهجتي وصوافني

فدتْك وربِّي مهجتي وصوافني

And if one like you could be ransomed with horses and lifeblood,

And if a stingy or hot-headed one would ransom you

my lifeblood and my poised steeds would ransom you, by my Lord.

I would ransom you - by God - my passion and yearning

تلافي تلافي بالخيال وآمني

عليه فعذالي نأت عن مساكني

عليه فعذالي نأت عن مساكني

Avert my ruin with a dream-visit, and have no fear

Wishing, always wishing, in my imagination

for it: my reproachers have gone far from my dwellings.

Trusting it, so my torment came from my dwellings

ويا ليتهم داموا فما كان ضايري

ويا ليتهم داموا فما كان ضايري

وأنتِ أمامي قربهم من أماكني

وأنتِ أمامي قربهم من أماكني

And oh, would that they had remained! It would not have harmed me,

Oh, if only they lasted, no harm would have come

with you before me, to have them near my dwelling places.

While you are before me, bring them near my dwellings

لقد جادني الرحمن بالوجد كله

لقد جادني الرحمن بالوجد كله

وجادك يا أسما بكل المحاسن

وجادك يا أسما بكل المحاسن

The Most Merciful has indeed showered me with longing in all its fullness,

Truly the Merciful has granted me ecstasy entire

and showered you, O Asma, with every charm.

And granted you, O Asma, all beauty
