قبلت ياقوتَ خديها وقلت لها

قبلت ياقوتَ خديها وقلت لها

يا نور من يرحم العشاق مرحومُ

يا نور من يرحم العشاق مرحومُ

I kissed the ruby of her cheeks and said to her:

I kissed her ruby cheeks and said to her

O light, whoever has mercy on lovers is shown mercy.

O light, who will have mercy on the departed lovers?

فأنشدت ونجوم الدر من مقلي

فأنشدت ونجوم الدر من مقلي

منثورةٌ وبفيها الدر منظوم

منثورةٌ وبفيها الدر منظوم

Then she recited, while stars of pearls from my eyes

Then she recited, and the stars of her tears were

Lay scattered, and in her mouth the pearls were strung:

Scattering, while the pearls in her mouth were strung together

قبلت ورد خدودي فاعف عن شفتي

قبلت ورد خدودي فاعف عن شفتي

واللَه لا مسها من فيك زقّوم

واللَه لا مسها من فيك زقّوم

You kissed the roses of my cheeks, so spare my lips;

I kissed the rose of her cheeks, so spare my lips

By God, may no zaqqum from your mouth touch them.

By Allah, none but you can touch them, you tyrant

فقلت والثغر مختوم بشامته

فقلت والثغر مختوم بشامته

هذا الرحيق الذي قد قيل مختوم

هذا الرحيق الذي قد قيل مختوم

Then I said, her mouth sealed with its mole:

So I said, while my lips were sealed by her mole

This is the pure wine that has been called 'sealed.'

This is the sealed wine, of which it is said 'sealed'
