إلام أروم الصبر والصبر نازحُ

وأكتم ما بي والدموع بوائحُ

How long shall I seek patience, while patience is far away,

Why should I feign patience, while patience has fled,

and conceal what ails me, while tears betray it,

And conceal what I feel, though my tears are shed?

واذكر ريا والحنين لزينبٍ

واذكر ريا والحنين لزينبٍ

ومصر وشوقي للنخيلة جانح

ومصر وشوقي للنخيلة جانح

and remember Rayya, while my longing is for Zaynab,

I remember the meadow, Zainab once bright,

and Egypt, while my yearning inclines toward al-Nukhayla?

And Egypt, my home, and the palm waving light.

ألا تتناءى بومة الصد ليلةً

فترقص في داري الحجول الصوادح

Will the owl of rejection not withdraw for one night,

O night-bird, that far in the desert dost wail,

so that the singing anklets may dance in my home,

Come dance in my dwelling, and mournfully hail;

وتسعدني من بارد الريق رشفةٌ

وتسعدني من بارد الريق رشفةٌ

تبرد ما كنته مني الجوانح

تبرد ما كنته مني الجوانح

and a sip of cool saliva may gladden me,

Give me of thy coolness, one drop from thy wing,

cooling what my ribs have concealed within me?

To soothe the hot thirst which my sad visions bring.

سأصبر حتى يأذن اللَه باللقا

سأصبر حتى يأذن اللَه باللقا

ويفتح باباً أغلقته الكواشح

ويفتح باباً أغلقته الكواشح

I shall be patient until God permits reunion,

I will wait, until God shall allow us to meet,

and opens a door that the ill-wishers have shut.

And open a door closed fast by fate's feet.
