He poured the ruby of morning before dawn,

and unveiled the sun with the moon’s palm—

a young gazelle. This was inscribed in myrtle upon

the roses of his cheeks by the God of mortals:

“O My servants, glorify Me and take your morning draught

of pure wine in green cups.”

So from his downy cheeks we drank wine,

like a ruby on a red cheek.

And we delighted in eyes kohl-lined

with languor, rather than the eyes of wild cattle,

and boughs that grew in striped robes,

rather than boughs that grew on trees.

Then, when the full moon set, and none

remained among the night companions but my moon,

he lavished wine and saliva together,

so we fulfilled one desire within another.
