Had I always had a dirham that sings without a mouth,

I would not have become like a shepherd without sheep.

rose-like in color and ruby-like in worth.

Or a lovely maiden: whenever her buttocks sway,

her supple figure sways, a branch atop a mountain.

at me even for a day, nor split the staff of my pledges.

So tell whoever says I have gone gray from old age:

Set aside care's onslaught, and behold the onslaught of ambition.

For resolve is a leg, but it has no foot

except pure gold—and who walks without a foot?

By God, my foot shall not bring me near wine

if my arbiter does not rid me of the age that afflicts me—

the best of generous men, Ibn Bistam, whose mouth

is generous with 'Take this,' and miserly with 'No' and 'Not.'

Benevolent: when the first seasonal rain closes its palm,

his generosity takes the place of the downpour of steady rains.

while the earth is emptier than a sandal without leather.

of prosperity, in pure gold, undiminished.

What, then, of today, when our clouds have become

like a fire-stick, with no torrent but blazing fire,

and the palm is emptier than land without trees

and than an inkwell without ink or pen?

May our master's dirhams forever sing the song

of doves, and banish grief with melody.

And may his envier remain a bow without a string,

living, but without wealth or retainers.
