بكىhe wept عليَّfor me غداةon the morning of البينparting حينwhen رأىhe saw
بكى عليَّ غداة البين حين رأى
شفاءa cure مثليfor one like me حديثاًa tale غيرnot مثبوتconfirmed
شفاء مثلي حديثاً غير مثبوت
He wept for me on the morning of parting, when he saw
That a cure for one like me was an unconfirmed tale.
ومنand from غراميmy passion ولوّاميand my reproachers عنaway from خطرٍdanger
ومن غرامي ولوّامي عن خطرٍ
دمعيmy tears يفيضoverflow وحاليand my state حالthe state of مبهوتone bewildered
دمعي يفيض وحالي حال مبهوت
And from my passion—while my reproachers are far from danger—
My tears overflow, and my state is that of one bewildered.
فمدمعيso my tears ذوبmolten ياruby (first segment) قوتruby (second segment) علىupon ذهبٍgold
فمدمعي ذوب يا قوت على ذهبٍ
شوقاًout of longing لوردةfor the rose of خدٍّa cheek حبهاlove for it قوتيmy sustenance
شوقاً لوردة خدٍّ حبها قوتي
So my tears are molten ruby upon gold,
In longing for a cheek’s rose, love for which is my sustenance.
وافىcame الحبيبthe beloved بكفيهwith both his palms يكفكفهwiping it away
وافى الحبيب بكفيه يكفكفه
ودمعهand his tears ذوبmolten درpearls فوقupon ياقوتruby
ودمعه ذوب در فوق ياقوت
The beloved came, wiping them away with both his palms,
And his tears were molten pearls upon ruby.
