Patience is but a writ whose term was fixed.

The herald of separation erased it when you went far away,

with a downpour of tears that none sets flowing

but you, O you who have taken dominion over my heart.

It flowed, and its pearls drew from the eyelids—

though white, O you with cheeks red as ʿanam—rubies.

Would that life had turned its reins away from me,

and that separation's hours had never bent your neck.

Indeed, by God, my solace, I have come

to see the forenoon as a shroud and night as a coffin.

So grant union and save a man, O clan of the veil, who sees the

venerable elder as a lout if he shuns you.

Where is the oath, and what you swore, O my hope?

Would that you had never sworn, O my lord!

How find the way to union—which I never gaze toward

without seeing it fastened among the stars—

and to smelling a cheek's rose, protected by guards

from your eyes, who drive a lion back aghast?

By your eyes' dark pupils and brilliant whites,

which disgraced and abashed Harut and Marut:

the east wind's fragrance never replaced your mouth's, nor

have I smelled powdered musk since your fragrance.

Nor have I seen the gardens of al-Sham flourishing

without imagining them barren desert wastes.

So turn to me, restoring my good fortune, with a glance—

a Turkish glance that has won me renown in love.

And pity an ailing man whom a gesture from you would cure,

even if he becomes unseen as a phantom, or dead.

Love has left of him only a fluttering heart—

may you be spared it—and an eye bewildered by you,

    تخالها عند خد الخد إصليتا

    and a steady rain of tears, all clotted blood;

you would take it for a polished sword as it furrows the cheek.

    O lightning of the mouth, its Kawthar has slaked you;

so quench my heart with what you drank, O lightning!

By love's sanctity, had the beloved given us

as sustenance the water of al-ʿUdhayb that he gave you,

our limbs would not be seared by love's anguish,

nor would the cord of union lie severed today.
