I am smitten with a maiden in the East whose light shines;
So one says, “This is the radiance of the West’s light.”

ويعمه ماء الحياء فيحجب
Fair-skinned, the redness of her cheeks veils her;
And modesty’s moisture envelops it, so it is veiled.

They foolishly call her “Morning Light”;
Have you ever seen a morning whose light never sets?

By God, were it not for the piety I harbor,
Her gray-white gazelle would not have eluded me.
