Is that a mole upon your cheek, or a salamander of fire

That has become captive to your all-conquering beauty?

Or a trusty bondsman whom you have entrusted

With the brilliant radiance of your cheeks?

    هو عيدها حتى بعيد الدار

    I would ransom a house of beauty with freeborn men;

He is its festival, even far from home.

Upon him, instead of silk, the myrtle of cheek-down.

Yet never did he seek a sip from the lips

But the cheek gave him a draught of fire.

O moon whose name was written

By beauty's pen upon the faces of the moons,

Nothing resembles your mole but a grain of ambergris,

    Tested with fire by the perfumer's hand;

Or a dot fallen from the pen that

    Praised Emir Muhammad al-Akkari.

A lion: when the army glimpses his shadow,

It envies the sandgrouse and the foxes in their lairs.

He smiles at oft-renewed war, as though it

Had appeared before him with full-breasted virgins.

And in his palm is the firebrand whose

Embers blaze only against the wicked.

So you see faces prostrate themselves before him,

As the Magians bowed before a face other than the Creator's.

And heads upon his spearheads seem,

After the seats of thought have burst,

Like fruit struck by arrows, still

    Clinging to the treetops.

How noble he is, and his illustrious, highborn kin,

Those generous chiefs, successors of the Ansar!

Who thrust with every piercing spear,

And strike with every keen-edged sword,

And wade through battalions to reach their like,

On tall steeds held ready for beasts of prey:

Every gliding mare, as though her forehead

    Were silver and her hide were fire;

And a well-formed steed like a bride, as though

    A torrent of gold—souls' treasure—flowed over him.

But for you, the watering places of his like would never have become

The jugular veins of every mighty lion.

O you whose sweet speech perfumes the gathering,

Of whom the camel-driver and night-traveler sing,

And whose words and deeds resemble one another

    As one dinar resembles another,

I praise you, hoping for your friendship, not

For your bounty, despite the poverty I bear.

For your bounty is freely offered to every hopeful seeker,

Whether clothed in the robes of reason or naked.

So accept—may my soul ransom you—the finest maiden,

A virgin endowed with grace and dignity.

She has reached you amid Mashrafi swords and spears,

Unafraid of the terror of slender lances and blades.

For souls can lightly bear, when they yearn

    For glory, the gravest dangers.

May poetic minds ever greet you with sculpted beauties,

While enemies' blood pours and flows before you.

And may you remain esteemed in rank, blessed with success,

As long as night falls and ends in day.
