You have come to dwell beside your Lord, O Abu al-Abbas,

and left your lion-cub as a mercy to the people:

a king in whom we see you, as though you were still

alive, caring for the weak among us and offering comfort.

Alas for you, crowned with noble virtues

that greeted us with generosity morning and evening.

Alas for the life whose days

    revived so many ruined dwellings!

Alas for a tenderhearted king! No pity was felt

for his youth by Death's cruel heart.

And for a masterful healer of the realm, carried off

by a disease that baffled every skilled physician.

Before he dwelt in the earth, I never thought

that full moons could vanish into graves.

I swear by Him who greeted you with Tasnim and

    exaltation, honor, and solace;

and by women of restrained gaze, and the wine

of which cupbearer and drinker boast:

but for your son al-Abbas, we would have been drowned and

burned by weeping and the blaze of sighs.

And those wise sayings would have proved vain, in whose verses

eloquence decreed thanks for every consoler.

    O king crowned with piety,

adorned and clad in the radiance of your glory,

and son of spearheads, reins, and sword edges,

and of magnanimity, generosity, and valor!

But for you, grief would have ruined the two pyramids and

assassinated al-Muqattam, Egypt's firmly rooted mountain,

and destroyed the minds of the people, old

and young, with the searing pangs of anxious thoughts.

When the light of souls dimmed, you restored it

through your welcome accession, like a lamp.

So may you be safe! Your virtues have planted in our minds

the lush shoots of hope after withering.

And take pride in the brilliance your Lord has given you,

with which the world has rivaled the wit of Iyas.

Let your youth not embolden your enviers against you,

showing you softer than a sprig of myrtle.

Indeed, spears are deadly, even if they

were as supple as your gracefully swaying form.

God has given you strength; so seize your foes

with forbearance or the slender, quivering spear.

And be patient under God's decree—exalted is His majesty—

for patience is the wont of lions in their wooded lairs.

For He is the One we hope will keep you safe

from the plotting of every slinking whisperer,

and keep Egypt forever a garden for you to enjoy,

O best of sons and noblest of saplings.
