    فلعلها ملّت من البعد

    Call out to Layla from the hills of Najd;

for perhaps she has wearied of separation.

And kindle a flame for her, should she come,

from my burning passion, and spread my cheek for her.

Never could she endure a journey—

a full-hipped woman, softer than butter.

Let me rend my riding-camel's hide

in earnest haste toward a woman of noble ancestry,

and visit a sun that nothing veils

but the dark nights of her dewy tresses,

that my heart may be gladdened by union, as

Damascus was gladdened by glorious Halet,

whose promise never outruns his hand

    in generosity, kindness, and aid:

the best of governors, the best of those who guide

and stand in the prayer niche like the Mahdi.

O you whose noble deeds, when counted,

    surpass all reckoning and counting!

But for you, Damascus would not have grown green, nor

would the poor man's hand have been moistened with coin.

All the people kept festival, rejoicing

in you, O refuge of freeman and slave.

May festivals remain ever present through you,

and may you remain a haven for gratitude and praise.
