Do you think Layla remembered our radiant little night?
Do you remember Layla and our nights of passion?
For we heard a burning sigh in the darkness.
For we heard her sighs in the darkness of night.

And did her breaths clasp the east wind's palm?
Did the breeze carry the fragrance of her breath?
For we smelled perfume from the lines of its palm.
For we smelled her sweet perfume from afar.

My soul for Layla! Layla has no concern
My soul cries for Layla though she cares not,
For the likes of us, enough to yearn for us aloud.
For the likes of me, nor feels pity in her heart.

And if one day a love-stricken man crossed her mind,
If she'd think of me just for a day,
It would occur to her to forsake rejection and estrangement,
She'd regret leaving me in sadness and sorrow.

And pity a lover whose heart patience has forsaken,
And have mercy on a youth whose heart left patience,
And whom the heart that forsook patience has forsaken.
As patience itself had already left his heart.

Perhaps the sigh of al-Sham that I have heard
Perhaps it was Layla that I heard in the dark,
Nurtures a virtuous, just, noble king.
A gracious, just, and noble queen.

The God of the Throne fashioned him as a sacred throne
May the Lord bless her throne, glorious and holy,
For His wisdom, and chose him as a treasure for humankind.
For her wisdom, and choose her to lead the land.

When the seeker of bounty is asked, with feigned ignorance,
When asked who crossed the desert and braved the seas,
For whom he crossed the desert and braved the sea,
Disregarding danger with utmost gallantry,

He says, 'For the best of men, the noblest in parentage,
She will say it's the best of men, the most gracious father,
The loftiest in rank and the broadest of breast.'
The highest in station, the most magnanimous in heart.
