O finest governor, whose bounty is a vast, sweet sea,

You are the minister before whom calamities vanish.

    The Christians’ feast has come, and the houses stand empty;

In the month of Kanun, no firewood has been kindled in them.

So if you delay disbursing the stipend that month,

Pens and books will take the place of firewood.

And if you order their stipend for Kanun the Latter,

Fresh aloeswood will proclaim your generosity therein.

May the festivals remain radiant in your days,

Gold and silver exchanging smiles in their cups.

And may you ever range farther in doing good than the moon,

As long as the seven bright wandering stars endure.
