Has the Pleiades' light faded beneath the stone pavilion,

or the light of Thurayya's face, that human star?

The light of her whose absence darkened the world,

when the eclipse of sun and moon announced her death.

A gazelle whose beauty's light, whenever she unveiled,

would erase sorrow's sign with a sign of joy.

How dreadful was the day when it was said she lay buried—

that gazelle with her necklace and robes.

I never thought I could live on, when there had fallen

upon me a thunderbolt from that news.

O my anguish, O my torment! I am left for nothing

but worry, grief, sorrows, and sleeplessness.

Alas for that beauty and that

winsome charm, and that radiant appearance,

and the jewel of gentleness and refinement, from whom

Zahle's graves snatched the noblest of pearls.

    Thurayya's soft cradle did not please her;

why, then, has she taken a cradle of stone?

In it, no distinction lies between a pious dweller and a wicked one,

or between a naked pauper and a man of rank.

I never thought the sun could set within

a bier borne by dignitaries toward the graves,

until a grave took her from her bier,

in Zahle's depths, with no pity for a mortal.

Then what sorrow for her has not gathered?

And what tears for her have not been scattered?

And what patience at her loss has not dispersed?

And what heart at her loss is not broken?

By God, O grave, has she remained as she was created,

smiling to reveal pearls within a fragrant ring?

Has her radiance endured, or perished, and has

the sweetness of that houri-like gaze departed from her?

Be gentle with her, be gentle: her fingertips

would almost bleed, so delicate were they, from fine cloth.

And have pity on jasmine that once bore a rosy glow

in the garden of her cheek, from modesty's rose.

You have doubled, O Death, my sorrows for my son

with her loss, and for my daughter; you left nothing, spared nothing.

What ails these tears? Were it not for their saltiness,

their vast seas would spare the world the need for rain.

    They flow to drown me, while sorrow comes to their aid;

why does caution's hand not wipe them away from me?

O Death, is drowning easy for me, now they are gone?

Yes, yes, easy, since my endurance has departed.

If only I were in your tomb, O Thurayya, or—

if only it were in my sight, O Thurayya!

Or would that my last breath, O my heart's blood, had been the ransom:

with dry grass one ransoms flourishing trees.

May He water your tomb, O dewy bough, with a shower

that pours from the Creator's mercy along with the rain.

and it is the path to the abode of salvation and victory.

May God inspire us with beautiful patience and guide

us along the way, and save us from danger,

so that we may win a reward that never passes away,

in obedience to God and submission to destiny.
