By your light the land shone and the sea rejoiced,

And injustice and oppression left them both.

You acted justly in dividing the shares between them,

As a mother deals justly in kindness to her children.

    وللبر برٌّ منك أبراجه الحزم

    For the sea, a sea from you whose waves are generosity;

And for the land, benevolence from you whose towers are prudence.

    And for the people, a fragrant garden of your virtues;

When one suffering a cold visits it, his sense of smell returns.

Gentleness, refinement, and fidelity spread their fragrance there,

And justice, excellence, and forbearance ripened there.

You departed as healing departs from her; there drew near no

Vision of serenity to us, nor did sickness depart.

Will the homelands shine, then, through your return,

So that the foe chokes in his tears because of it?

And after the day of parting, is there a day brought back

To us by your black steeds, like brilliant white stars?

They say, 'This year is ill-fated for mankind.'

    So I said, 'For al-Sham, which sorrow has engulfed;

But for the abode of happiness and serenity,

It is a happy year, graced by noble Asʿad.'

You attained your wishes there; do not cut off hope

Of a happy return that brings nothing but gain.

And take from my verse what surpasses all poetry:

Three couplets with which the poem is concluded.

In six hemistichs we compose six

And sixty chronograms, set out by numerical reckoning.

For you are none but the just and virtuous man

To whom the true-born Arabs and the non-Arabs submit.

A generous, benevolent, mighty minister, adorned

With mastery of precious forbearance; proud, a noble chief.

Accomplished; his palms vie with truthfulness in piety,

Cheerful; prudence and determination seek his counsel.

He vies in glory with all creation; goodness has crowned his year,

Swift to do good; want has never visited his splendor.
