May my father and I be ransom for the moon who enchanted humankind

with his beauty, and surpassed the angels in appearance.

A moon who smiled, swaying, then unveiled himself to the

lovers as a branch blossoming with stars.

He mounted the steed's back, and I thought him

a lion training a wild-ox calf to be tractable.

He said, “If you catch its dust, half of it is yours

as a gift.” So I said, as I stood bewildered:

“You are the generous one; grant it to a laggard

who, if he tasted the wine of your dark lips, would race Caesar.”

And by God, I had not finished the last word

before his dark lips were like al-Kawthar in my mouth.

And I was given his neighing steed and returned with thanks to him,

before the race, proclaiming God's oneness and greatness.
