فماfor not لكfor you بعدafter فاتنتيmy enchantress مقيلُa midday resting place
Depart, O beautiful patience!
Patience, my beautiful patience, it is time for you to leave
For after my enchantress, you have no midday resting place.
For after my darling, I have no rest
وقاتلand fight ياO عذولreproacher سوايsomeone other than me إنيindeed I
بسيفby the sword صدودهاher rejection الماضيkeen قتيلslain
And fight someone else, O reproacher, for I
Oh, my grief, be my companion, for her flashing sword of the past has killed me
Am slain by the keen sword of her rejection.
Her face has made my days and nights dark
بروحيwith my soul as ransom منthe one who سنىbrightened ليلىmy night نهاراًinto day
دجتgrew dark لبعادهbecause of his distance عنيfrom me الطلولthe ruins
My soul would ransom the one who brightened my night to day;
She has folded the tents and left lightly
The ruins grew dark because of his distance from me.
Gently, yet under them lies a heavy mountain

And an arak bough that turned away, light
I see the astrologer's words about Suhail are weak
And delicate, with a heavy mountain beneath it.
They hold no proof for me

ضعيفاًweak ماnot لهfor it عنديwith me دليلevidence
I deem the astrologer's claim about Suhayl
How often has the smoothness of her brow
Weak: I have no evidence for it.
In its glow outlived raging grief
فكمfor how often حاكىresembled سهلthe smooth expanse جبينforehead ليلىLayla
برونقهin its brilliance وماand not ماتdied العذولthe reproacher
For how often Layla's smooth brow has mirrored it
When have slanderers accused her fawn eyes?
In its brilliance, yet the reproacher has not died!
Every dove among them coos

فكلthen every حمامةٍdove منهاamong them صهيلa neigh
Whenever the tale-bearers describe Layla's anklets,
I wish I could change your face for hers
Then every dove among them neighs.
But kohl has avoided your glances
أبدرO full moon التمfullness وجهكyour face وجهthe face ليلىLayla
ولكنand yet فاتكَeluded you الطرفُthe eye الكحيلkohl-dark
O full moon, your face is Layla's face,
And, oh gentle morning breeze, I am weak
And yet you lack the kohl-dark eye.
Ill or lovelorn from her sight
وياand O عَرْفَfragrance الصباthe east wind إنيindeed I ضعيفweak

And, O fragrance of the east wind, I am weak,
Describe my longing for her and my body, worn thin
Like you, or ailing like her eye.
As if torrents have washed its muscles away
فصفso describe شوقيmy longing لهاfor her ونحولand wasting جسمٍa body
تجفُّdry up علىupon لواعجهits burning pangs السيولthe torrents
So describe my longing for her and the wasting of a body
I hope she will heal me with a union
On whose burning pangs the torrents run dry.
That will banish the strange pain
عساهاperhaps she أنto تداوينيheal me بوصلٍwith union

Perhaps she will heal me with union,
He who knows her aversion is ignorant
Through which the invading illness will leave me.
And he who knows her ignorant, a fool
جهولٌignorant منwhoever يعلمهاinforms her صدوديmy aloofness
صدوديmy aloofness منwhoever يعلمهاinforms her جهولignorant
A fool is whoever tells her of my aloofness;
When she unites to then abandon me
My aloofness—whoever tells her of it is a fool.
Each of her days a new farewell

لتبعدto draw away كلُّeach of يوميهاher two days رحيلdeparture
Whenever she grants union to forsake, or draws near
Why, oh Laila, do I speak?
To draw away, each of her two days is departure.
Stingy with your image and mere dreams the stingiest miser
إلامَhow long أقولshall I say ياO ليلىLayla بخيلٌmiserly
خيالكyour phantom والكرىand sleep الكزّtightfisted البخيلmiserly
How long must I say, O Layla, "Miserly
Your impossible loyalty has stolen my sleep
Are your phantom and tightfisted, miserly sleep"?
So my hopes of your phantom are impossible
وفاكyour fidelity المستحيلimpossible أطارdrove away نوميmy sleep
فإلماميso my encounter بطيفكwith your phantom مستحيلimpossible
Your impossible fidelity drove my sleep away;
So my encounter with your phantom is impossible.
