A beloved's phantom—may sudden death never touch him—

visited us while most people were silent.

He held fast to pledges I had given—how lovely

the way my hearing held fast when he said, 'I have held fast.'

How strange that, when I grew drunk on his saliva,

whose wont is to intoxicate—how did I awaken?

And how did my eyes turn his form away from me?

How often I beheld moonlight, yet the moonlight never set!

My soul for that phantom, who departed from my eye,

saying, 'When drowsiness returns to it, I shall return.'

If only sleep's steed would grant me enjoyment of him,

for no other horses have helped, nor Bactrian camels.

O reproacher, be sure I longed for his return,

    and yearned for dusky lips, sweet to drink from;

and that my heart, since passion disquieted it,

flutters like a bird sent flying by a hawk.

fought over by a wolf and a massive lion.

My soul has never ceased wandering in love for a tender maiden,

like a diver's pearl treasured by its oyster shell.

Slender—were it not for eloquence and ornaments,

the gazelles would tell her, 'You are their sister.'

    وطرتها ليلٌ يزول به المقت

    Upon her brow is a dawn through which serenity endures;

her forelock is a night through which loathing vanishes.

You say, when she sways, 'Lances'; and when she gazes,

'Oryxes'; and when she speaks, 'Pure, aged wine.'

She struts with pomegranates grown round, just as

an ivory casket is round, visible through the cloak.

And a wild-rose face says to a part of itself,

'I marvel: my hue is diamond—how did I turn ruby-red?'

She wrongs me; I fear that, if I complain, she will melt

from the heat of my breaths, so silence binds me.

I swear by my love for her: the fire of her cheeks

roasted my liver as moths are roasted, yet I did not repent.

'Will you turn away from this?' It said, 'Even if I die.'

to tell me in which land it has its throne.

If only you had put reproach before love,

perhaps my heart would have rejected what I chose.

By your Lord, have you seen a gazelle's eye

before which the predator humbles itself, and which the idol fears?

and remain unharmed, unless biting cold has kindled it?

have tired of my long nights and cried, 'God is great.'

Perhaps life beside you will grow pleasant, just as

time grows pleasant through generous Abd al-Qadir.
