Awake—for here is the sword, clanging upon heads,
Awaken, for this sword has clattered among heads,
and here the tongue of triumph rings aloud with victory.
and this tongue of triumph has rung out with victory.

منازلها إلا من الوحش بلقعا
These are al-Salt’s fortresses, demolished and become
And these fortresses of al-Salt have been razed; now
dwellings left desolate, save for wild beasts.
their dwellings are a wasteland, save for wild beasts.

وأدبر ذئب المفسدين مروعا
The reformers’ champion advanced, upheld,
And the lion of the reformers advanced, strengthened,
while the corruptors’ wolf retreated in terror.
and the wolf of the corrupters retreated in terror.

فوالوا الوزير الشهم واستغنموا الرضى

So be loyal to the gallant minister and seize the chance to earn favor,
So be loyal to the valiant minister and secure his favor,
and fall down before God, prostrate and bowing.
and fall before God, prostrating yourselves and bowing.

Beware of turning away from allegiance to him,
And beware of turning away from allegiance to him:
lest what befell those who faltered befall you.
what befell those who shrank back will befall you.

Consider, my friend, how justice made our highlands fruitful,
Consider, my friend, how justice has made fertile
and how the drought departed and withdrew;
our hills, and how drought has departed and ceased.

And how Darwish clothed himself in triumph and girded himself
with the keen sword of God’s victory when he donned his armor.
with the keen sword of God's victory when he donned armor.

God endowed Darwish with courage and generosity,
God endowed Darwish with courage and generosity,
and gave him gifts never granted to one more splendid.
and gave him what He had never given any gallant man.

He bestowed Syria upon him, and he revived its dead lands
And He granted him Syria, so he revived its lifeless lands,
and made firm those pillars of hers that had been shaken.
and steadied those of its pillars that had tottered.

وإن شئت أن تحيي العفاة فقل دعا
If you wish to annihilate the valiant warriors, say: “He struck”;
If you wish to destroy the armored warriors, say, 'He attacked!'
and if you wish to revive the seekers of bounty, say: “He called.”
And if you wish to revive the supplicants, say, 'He summoned them!'

فعامله إن هش للخطب أقلعا

ونائله إن بش للصخر أينعا
Deal with him: when he smiles upon a crisis, he uproots it;
For if his spearhead smiles at calamity, calamity departs,
and his largesse, if it smiles upon rock, makes it bear fruit.
and if his bounty smiles upon rock, the rock blossoms.

Even the piercing stars fall short of his lofty attainments,
And beneath his lofty glories are the piercing-bright stars,
and pouring clouds fall short of his bountiful hands.
and beneath his benefactions are the rain-pouring clouds.

No mountain matches him in steadfastness, nor the rain
Thus no towering mountain rivals him in steadfastness, nor the rain
in generosity, nor the noonday sun in radiance.
in generosity, nor the noonday sun in splendor.

You see him, when the wine cup circles, a nightingale;
You see him, when the cup goes round, as a nightingale,
but when fierce war rages, a valiant chief.
and when war rages anew, as a valiant lord.
