قالت فتاة الحي لما رنت

عيني لها أخطأت يا سيدي

عيني لها أخطأت يا سيدي

The maiden of the quarter said, when

The girl from the neighborhood said when I winked,

My eye gazed at her: “You are mistaken, my lord.

"My eyes have wronged you, sir."

ما البكر كالثّيب أعمالها

ما البكر كالثّيب أعمالها

تخفى على أترابها الخرّدِ

تخفى على أترابها الخرّدِ

A virgin is not like a nonvirgin; her deeds

A virgin's deeds are not the same as a non-virgin's;

Are hidden from her bashful maiden peers.”

Her foolish acts are hidden from her peers.

فقلت يا روحي اسمحي بالتي

فقلت يا روحي اسمحي بالتي

يطلبها الشيخ من الأمرد

يطلبها الشيخ من الأمرد

So I said, “O my soul, consent to what

So I said, "My soul, forgive her

The old man seeks from the beardless youth.

Whom the old man seeks for pleasure."

فوالذي تعنو النواصي له

فوالذي تعنو النواصي له

ما سفهت قولي ولا مقصدي

ما سفهت قولي ولا مقصدي

For, by Him to whom forelocks bow,

By Him to whom necks bow down,

I have been foolish neither in my words nor in my intent.”

I spoke no folly, nor did I intend any.
