قالت أما كنت قبل اليوم تعشقني
والدمعand the tears كالماءlike water مماfor what reason? اليومtoday صارbecame دماblood
والدمع كالماء مما اليوم صار دما
She said, “Did you not love me before today?
She said, "Did you not love me before today?
And tears were like water—why have they turned to blood today?”
And tears flowed like water which today turned to blood."
فقلتso I said ياO منيتيmy heart’s desire الحمامthe bath أنبتmade grow فيin
فقلت يا منيتي الحمام أنبت في
جنانgardens خدكyour cheek ورداًroses يفتنbewitches الأمماthe nations
جنان خدك ورداً يفتن الأمما
So I said, “O my heart’s desire, the bath has grown in
So I said, "O my wish, the dove grew
The gardens of your cheek roses that bewitch the nations.
In the gardens of your cheek, roses that enchant nations."
علاrose علىabove ياسمينjasmine الخدthe cheek فاقتطفتthen plucked
علا على ياسمين الخد فاقتطفت
منهfrom it العيونthe eyes فأجراهthen made it flow الجوىlove’s anguish عنَماʿanam, a red plant
منه العيون فأجراه الجوى عنَما
They rose above the cheek’s jasmine, and were plucked
It rose above the jasmine of the cheek, so I picked
From it by the eyes; then love’s anguish made them flow, crimson as ʿanam.”
From it eyes that shed it like a torrent.
