تدفق ماء معدني من الصخر

يذكرني مما تخلد في الفكر

The flow of mineral water from the rock

reminds me of what lives on in memory:

زماناً قضينا في جبال نفوسة

بربوة بنداو المجاور للقصر

a time we spent in the Nafusa Mountains,

on the rise at Bandaw, beside al-Qasr.

فحنت إلى الأوطان نفس غريبة

نأت فرأت أنساً بإخوانها الغر

So a soul far from home yearned for its native lands;

it had gone far away, then found solace with its illustrious brothers.

فأنت وتاهت في الخيال ورفرفت

عشية اذ هب النسيم على الزهر

So it sighed, wandered in imagination, and fluttered,

one evening, when the breeze blew over the flowers.

ودارت كؤس الشاي بين أحبة

كرام كاخوان الصفا مظهر الفخر

And cups of tea went round among dear friends,

noble, like the Brethren of Purity, a source of pride.

سبحنا وروحنا النفوس سويعة

وعدنا وجنح الليل منسدل الستر

We swam and refreshed our souls for a little while,

and returned with nightfall's curtain hanging down.

تحف بنا تلك الجبال يزينها

من الثلج هامات كمنفلق الفجر

Those mountains surround us, adorned

with snowy summits like the breaking dawn.

وطرق كقضبان اللجين ترصعت

بها الروض من صنف الزياتين والسدر

And paths like rods of silver adorned

the groves of olive and lote trees.

هنيئا لنا اذ تم أنس اجتماعنا

وعدنا وكل الجمع منشرح الصدر

What joy for us, when our gathering's delight was complete!

And we returned, all the company light of heart.
