Whenever the wind comes to us from the direction of his land,
When the wind blows to us from the direction of his land
It brings him to us, perfumed with his fragrance, and its blowing becomes sweet.
It comes to us bearing the scent of his radiant meadows, so its blowing is pleasant

وَريحِ خُزامى باكَرتهُ جنوبُها
It brings us an enduring fragrance of musk and ambergris,
It comes to us with an eternal, musky fragrance, with ambergris,
And the scent of lavender, visited at dawn by its south wind.
And the south wind of Khuzama in its prime
أَحنّI yearn لِذكراهُfor his remembrance إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle ذَكَرتُهُI remembered him
أَحنّ لِذكراهُ إِذا ما ذَكَرتُهُ
وَتَنهلand pour down عَبراتٌtears تَفيضoverflow غُروبهاtheir streams
وَتَنهل عَبراتٌ تَفيض غُروبها
I yearn for his memory whenever I remember him,
I yearn for his memory when I remember him
And tears pour down, their streams overflowing—
And tears well up and flow with their sadness
حَنينُthe yearning of أَسيرٍa captive نازحٍfar from home شدّwas tightened قَيدهُhis fetter

وَأَعوال نَفسٍ غابَ عَنها حَبيبها
The yearning of a captive far from home whose fetter has been tightened,
The longing of a displaced captive whose chains are drawn tight
And the wailing of a soul whose beloved has gone away from her.
And the lament of a soul whose beloved has left her
