فيهِfor him أَهلُthe people of الحَيّthe quarter هامواbecame mad with love
O beautiful one who has revealed himself,
O beautiful one who has appeared
the people of the quarter went mad with love for him,
In whom the people of the neighborhood fell in love
سِيَماespecially لَمّاwhen تَحلّىhe adorned himself
وَحَلاand grew sweet فيهِin him الغَرامُpassionate love
especially when he adorned himself,
Especially when you adorned yourself
and passion grew sweet in him.
And love dwelled within me
قُلتI said لَمّاwhen لاحَhe appeared يجلىshining forth
وَاِنجلىand cleared away عَنّيfrom me الظَلامُthe darkness
I said, when he appeared, shining forth,
I said when your brightness appeared
and the darkness cleared away from me:
And my darkness dispersed from me
هَكَذاthus العَيشُlife وَإِلّاor else
فَعَلىthen upon العَيشlife السَلامُpeace
This is life—otherwise,
Life is thus, and if not
then farewell to life!
Then greetings to life
حَبَّذاhow lovely لَمّاwhen سَقانيhe gave me to drink
صَفوَthe pure draught of كَأسِthe cup of الحُبِّlove صِرفاunmixed
How lovely it was when he gave me to drink
Blessed is when you quenched my thirst
the pure draught of love's cup, unmixed,
With the wine of love’s chalice purely
وَحَبانيand he favored me بِالتَدانيwith nearness
وَاِنثَنَىand he bent جيداًneck وَعطفاand flank
and favored me with nearness,
And loved me with intimacy
and bent his neck and flank.
And bent your neck and was gentle

وَجَلىand he cleared away عَنّيfrom me الظَلامthe darkness
One kept afar grew sweet in my heart,
Absent in heart, beautiful
and cleared the darkness away from me.
And my darkness disappeared from me
هَكَذاthus العَيشlife وَإِلاor else

This is life—otherwise,
Life is thus, and if not
then farewell to life!
Then greetings to life
ياO خَليّuntroubled البالِmind هَلّاwill you not
تَدخلyou enter الحانthe tavern وَتَعشقand you fall in love
O carefree one, will you not
O you who carries worries
enter the tavern and fall in love?
Why don't you enter the melodies and fall in love
إِنّindeed لَيلthe night of الصَدّrejection وَلّىhas passed
وَصَباحُand the morning of الوَصلِunion أَشرَقhas shone forth
Indeed, the night of rejection has passed,
Surely the night of estrangement has passed
and the morning of union has shone forth.
And the dawn of reunion has risen
وَمقامُand the station of الحَبِّlove جَلّis exalted
لاnot يُضاهيهِequals it مَقامُa station
And love's station is exalted;
The abode of love is magnificent
no station equals it.
Nothing equals its abode
هَكَذاthus العَيشُlife وَإِلّاor else
فَعَلىthen upon العَيشِlife السَلامُpeace
This is life—otherwise,

Then greetings to life
