خلقَتgrew worn هَياكِلُهاher temples بِجَرعاءِon the sandy ground of الحِمىthe sanctuary
وَصَبتand she yearned لِمَغناهاfor her abode القَديمthe ancient تَشَوّقاin longing
Her temples grew worn on the sanctuary’s sandy ground.
Her structures were created by the fever's flames,
And, full of longing, she yearned for her ancient abode.
And she poured out her yearning for the ancient tune.
مَحجوبَةveiled سَفرتshe unveiled herself وَأَسفَرand shone forth صُبحهاher dawn
وَتَجَرَّدتand she stripped herself عَمّاof what أَجدّmade new وَأَخلقاand wore out
Once veiled, she unveiled herself, and her dawn shone forth.
Veiled, she journeyed, and her dawn broke free,
And she stripped herself of all that had been renewed and worn out.
Stripping herself of all I own and make.
وَتَلَفّتتand she turned to look نَحوَtoward الدِّيارِthe dwellings فَشاقَهاso it stirred her longing
رَبعa homestead عَفَتhad vanished أَطلالُهُits ruins فتَمَزَّقاand so it fell apart
And she turned toward the dwellings, stirred to longing by
She turned toward the homelands, but their slice of virtue
A homestead whose ruins had vanished and which had fallen apart.
Razed her, its ruins fragmented, torn apart.
وَغَدَتand she began تردّدُrepeating فيin الفَضاءِthe open air حَبيبهاher beloved
فَيَرومso he seeks مُرتَبِعاًsojourning in spring يَروقenchants المُرتقىthe ascent
And she began repeating her beloved’s name through the open air.
She came to echo through the firmament, calling her beloved,
So he seeks, sojourning in spring, an ascent that enchants.
Who squatted, hoping to ascend the heights.
وَقَفَتshe stood تُسائِلُهquestioning him فَرَدَّso returned جَوابَهاher answer
رَجعَreverberation الصَّدىthe echo أنthat لاno سَبيلَway إِلىto اللّقاreunion
She stood questioning him, and in answer came
She stood questioning him, and he returned her answer -
The echo’s reverberation: “There is no path to reunion.”
The echo came: no way to reunite.
فَشَكَتso she lamented بِعَينِwith the eye of الحالِthe state مَعهَدthe familiar haunt of عَهدِهاher former days
أَسَفاًin sorrow عَلىover شَملٍa union مَضىhad passed وَتَفَرَّقاand scattered
So, with the eye of her plight, she mourned the haunt of her former days,
With eyes that told the present state, she mourned their pledged troth,
In sorrow for a union that had passed away and scattered.
Grieving over a union gone, dispersed.
فَكَأَنَّماso it was as though بَرقٌlightning تَأَلّقgleamed بِالحِمىin the sanctuary
ثُمَّthen اِنطَوىfolded away فَكَأَنَّهُso it was as though it ماnot أَبرَقاflashed
So it was as though lightning had gleamed in the sanctuary,
As if a lightning flash had flickered in the flames
Then folded away—as though it had never flashed.
Then folded in, as though it never flashed.
