    Each day a reproach from you alarms me.

    What sin has the lover committed against you?

    If my slanderers have fabricated a tale

    Of my forgetting your love—my heart gives it the lie.

    بَل وَقَلبي لَها المَحبّة قَلبُ

    My ribs have your love as their ribs;

    Nay, my heart, too, has love as its heart.

    I died from the tyranny of lords who made lawful

    The killing of one whose only sin is love.

    In loving him I gained a rank that no

    Lovesick lover ever attained in loving them.

    وَفُؤادٌ عَلى التَّقاطعِ يَصبو

    Streaming tears, and a wasted body,

    And a heart that yearns despite estrangement;

    And ribs weakened by love's anguish,

    And tears poured forth with the heart's molten substance.

    O my night companion! I have not said, 'O my night companion,'

    Even once, without passion and love answering.

    Have you heard of a remedy for the sickness of love?

    Is there healing in love for one dead from passion?

    Between my body and sickness there is peace; and between the

    eyelid and sleep, when he turned away, there is war.

    Who will save me from a tyrant who has seized the

    heart, where today he kills and plunders?

    He came as a temptation to people, with cheeks

    Whose fire in our hearts does not die down.

    ما لِدَمعي سِوى الجفن غَربُ

    Indeed, my eye is the east for the sun of your face;

    My tears have no west except the eyelid.
