At al-ʿAqīq we gathered,

At al-'Aqiq we met,

we and the dark-eyed ones.

Myself and those with dark eyes.

أَظنّ مَجنونَ لَيلى

أَظنّ مَجنونَ لَيلى

ما جنّ بَعضَ جُنوني

ما جنّ بَعضَ جُنوني

I think Majnun of Layla

I think Layla's mad lover

was not even a fraction as mad as I.

Is no madder than I.

إِن مُتّ وَجداً عَلَيهم

إِن مُتّ وَجداً عَلَيهم

بِأَدمُعي غَسَلوني

بِأَدمُعي غَسَلوني

If I die of longing for them,

Should I die, and they find me,

wash me with my tears.

With my tears they'll bathe me.

نوحوا عَلَيَّ وَقُولوا

نوحوا عَلَيَّ وَقُولوا

هَذا قَتيل العُيونِ

هَذا قَتيل العُيونِ

Lament over me and say:

Weep for me and say,

“This is one slain by eyes.”

"This was slain by eyes."

أَيا عُيوني عيوني

أَيا عُيوني عيوني

وَيا جُفوني جَفوني

وَيا جُفوني جَفوني

O my eyes, my eyes!

Oh, my eyes! My eyes!

And O my eyelids—they have forsaken me!

And oh, my eyelids! My eyelids!

فَيا فُؤادي تَصبّر

فَيا فُؤادي تَصبّر

عَلى الَّذي فارَقوني

عَلى الَّذي فارَقوني

So, O my heart, be patient

So my heart, be patient

with those who have parted from me.

With those who left me.
