عَلى ظَمأ بِتنا إِلى موقف النَجوى
And when we reached Midian’s water, he was drawing water;
When we reached the waters of Medina to draw
Thirsty, we spent the night turned toward the place of intimate converse.
Thirsty as we were, we came to a rendezvous

مُقَدّسة لا هِندَ فيها وَلا عَلوى
We lodged with a noble clan, whose homes
We settled with a noble tribe whose homes
Are sacred: neither Hind nor ʿAlwā is there.
Were sacred, containing neither Hind nor 'Alwa
وَلاحَتand appeared لَناto us نارٌa fire عَلىat البُعدthe distance أضرمَتkindled
وَلاحَت لَنا نارٌ عَلى البُعد أضرمَت

وَجَدنا عَلَيها مِن تحبُّ وَمَن تَهوى
And a fire appeared to us, kindled in the distance;
A fire lit up for us in the distance
At it we found the one you love and the one you desire.
Where we found those we love and those we adore

وَأَسكَرَنا مَن راح إِجلاله التَقوى
He gave us drink and greeted us, bringing our souls to life;
They quenched our thirst and brought us to life
And the one whose wine of reverence is piety intoxicated us.
And intoxicated us was he whose dignity is piety
