خِيامٌ بِنَجدٍ دونَها الطّرف يَقصرُ
I yearn for the land of the Hijaz, and all I desire—
I yearn for the land of the Hijaz, and my desire is
my tents in Najd—lies beyond the reach of sight.
tents in Najd, beyond the reach of sight.
وَماand not نَظَريmy gazing نَحوَtoward الحِجازthe Hijaz بِنافعيof benefit to me
وَما نَظَري نَحوَ الحِجاز بِنافعي
أَجلyes وَلَكِنّيand yet I عَلىdespite ذَاكَthat أَنظرُI look
أَجل وَلَكِنّي عَلى ذَاكَ أَنظرُ
Yet looking toward the Hijaz does me no good.
And my gazing toward the Hijaz does me no good.
Yes—but even so, I continue to look.
Yes, and yet I look despite that.
أَفيis there in...? كُلِّevery يَومٍday نَظرَةٌa glance ثُمّthen عَبرةٌa tear

لِعَينيك يَجري ماؤُها يَتَحدّرُ
Is every day to bring a glance, and then a tear—
Is there each day a glance, then a tear
its water coursing down from your eyes?
for your eyes, its water flowing, streaming down?

When shall the heart find rest—either dwelling nearby,
When will the heart find rest, whether dwelling nearby,
grief-stricken, or far away, remembering?
sorrowful, or far away, remembering?
