قُلsay لِلمُثَلَّمِto al-Muthallam وَاِبنِand the son of هِندٍHind بَعدَهُafter him
إِنif كُنتَyou are رائِمَseeking عِزِّناour might فَاِستَقدِمِthen advance
Tell al-Muthallam, and Ibn Hind after him:
If it is our might you seek, then advance.
تَلقَyou will face الَّذيwhat لاقىbefell العَدُوَّthe enemy وَتَصطَبِحand drink in the morning
كَأساًa cup صُبابَتُهاits last drops كَطَعمِlike the taste of العَلقَمِcolocynth
You will face what befell the enemy, and take your morning draught:
A cup whose last drops taste like colocynth.
نَحبوwe bestow upon الكَتيبَةَthe war-band حينَwhen تَقتَرِشُinterlock القَناthe spears
طَعناًspear-thrusts كَإِلهابِlike the blazing of الحَريقِthe fire المُضرَمِkindled
We bestow upon the war-band, when the spears interlock,
Spear-thrusts like the blaze of a kindled fire.
مِنّاof ours بِشَجنَةٍat Shajnah وَالذِنابِand al-Dhinab فَوارِسٌhorsemen
وَعتائِدٍand ʿAtaʾid مِثلُlike السَوادِthe dark mass المُظلَمِdark
At Shajnah and al-Dhinab are horsemen of ours,
And at ʿAtaʾid, like a mass of darkness,
وَبِضَرغَدٍand at Darghad وَعلىand upon السُديرِal-Sudayr وَحاضِرٍand Hadir
وَبِذيand at Dhu أَمَرَّAmarr حَريمُهُمtheir womenfolk لَمnot يُقسَمِwere divided up
And at Darghad, and at al-Sudayr and Hadir,
And at Dhu Amarr—their womenfolk were not divided as spoil.
فَدَهِمنَهُمso they assailed them دَهماًan onslaught بِكُلِّon every طِمِرَّةٍfleet mare
وَمُقَطِّعٍand one that snaps حَلقَthe rings of الرِحالَةِthe saddle مِرجَمِstone-flinging
Then they swept down upon them in an onslaught, on every fleet mare,
And every stone-flinging steed that snaps the saddle-rings.
وَلَقَدand indeed خَبَطنَthey struck بَنيthe sons of كِلابٍKilab خَبطَةًa blow
أَلصَقَتهُمpinned them بِدَعائِمِto the supporting posts of المُتَخَيَّمِthe encampment
And indeed they struck the sons of Kilab a blow
That pinned them to the camp's tent-poles.
وَصَلَقنَand they struck fiercely كَعباًKaʿb قَبلَbefore ذَلِكَthat صَلقَةًa crushing blow
بِقَناًwith spears تَعاوَرُهُtake turns wielding it الأَكُفُّthe hands مُقَوَّوِمstraightened
And before that they struck Kaʿb a crushing blow,
With straight spears that hands wield in turn,
حَتّىuntil سَقَيناwe gave drink to الناسَthe people كَأساًa cup مُرَّةًbitter
مَكروهَةًloathsome حُسُواتَهاits sips كَالعَلقَمِlike colocynth
Until we made the people drink a bitter cup,
Whose sips are loathsome, like colocynth.
