إِنif أُمسيI reach evening لاnot أَشتَكيI complain of نُصبيmy weariness إِلىto أَحَدٍanyone
وَلَستُand I am not مُهتَدِياًfinding my way إِلّاunless مَعيwith me هادِa guide
Even if I reach evening complaining of my weariness to no one,
If in the evening I do not complain of my troubles to anyone,
and cannot find my way unless a guide is with me,
And I have no guide but myself,
فَقَدyet indeed صَبَحتُI raided at dawn سَوامَgrazing herds الحَيِّof the clan مُشعِلَةًscattered widely
رَهواًin great numbers تَطالَعُemerging مِنfrom غَورٍlowland وَأَنجادِand uplands
yet I have raided the clan's grazing herds at dawn, scattered far and wide,
I have become like a flaming torch in the dark of night
in great numbers, emerging from lowlands and uplands.
That looks out from a cave or highland,
وَقَدand indeed يَسَرتُI cast gambling lots إِذاwhen ماfor emphasis الشَولُthe dry she-camels رَوَّحَهاdrove them home at evening
بَردُcold العَشِيِّof evening بِشَفّانِwith chill winds وَصُرّادِand piercing cold
And I have cast gambling lots when the dry she-camels were driven home
And I become content when the late morning breeze refreshes it,
by evening's cold, with chill winds and piercing cold.
With the coolness of evening, with roasted meat and crackers.
ثُمَّتَthen أَطعَمتُI gave as food زاديmy provisions غَيرَnot مُدَّخِرٍhoarding
أَهلَthe people of المَحلَّةِthe encampment مِنincluding جارٍa neighbor وَمِنand including جادِa supplicant
Then I gave my provisions as food, keeping nothing back,
Then I share my provisions without hoarding,
to the people of the encampment, neighbor and supplicant alike.
With the people of the campsite, both neighbor and wayfarer.
وَقَدand indeed دَفَعتُI warded off وَلَمand did not أَجرُرI bring down عَلىupon أَحَدٍanyone
فَتقَa breach العَشيرَةِof the clan وَالأَكفاءِand the peers شُهّاديmy witnesses
And I have warded off, and never brought upon anyone,
And I give without dragging anyone down,
a breach within the clan—and my peers are my witnesses.
Thus excelling over clan and peers.
قَدindeed يَعلَمُknow القَومُthe people إِذwhen طالَتgrew long غَزاتُهُمtheir raid
وَأَرمَلواand they exhausted الزادَthe provisions أَنّيthat I مُنفِدٌspending to the last زاديmy provisions
The people know well, when their raid has grown long
The people will know, when their raids have gone on too long,
and they have exhausted their food, that I spend all my provisions.
And they are bereft of supplies, that I provide provisions,
وَلَستُand I am not غاشِيَadopting أَخلاقٍtraits أُسَبُّI am reviled بِهاfor them
حَتّىuntil يَؤوبَreturns مِنَfrom القَبرِthe grave اِبنُson of مَيّادِMayyad
Nor am I one to adopt traits for which I am reviled,
And I am not of base morals that I would be blamed for
until Ibn Mayyad returns from the grave.
Until the son of Mayyad comes back from the grave.
أَثنواpraise عَلَيَّupon me فَكائِنfor many a قَدindeed فَتَحتُI opened لَكُمfor you all

Praise me, for many have I opened for you—
Praise me, for I have opened for you
doors to noble deeds worth reckoning, or valleys.
A gate of generosity that is highly regarded.
