وَعَدتَyou promised بِأَنthat تُنَفِّذَyou would send ليto me حَصيراًa mat
وَهَلand does يَعِدُpromise الحَصيرَthe mat سِوىanyone but الحَقيرِthe contemptible man
You promised to send me a mat,
You promised to weave a mat for me
And who but a contemptible man promises a mat?
Yet who but the lowly promise mats?
وَلَمand did not تَفِfulfill your promise إِذwhen وَعَدتَyou promised وَأَيُّand what خَيرٍgood
يُرَجّىis hoped for مِنfrom يَديthe two hands of نَحسٍill-starred فَقيرِa pauper
And you did not keep the promise you made—and what good
You did not keep your word when you promised
Can be hoped for from the hands of an ill-starred pauper?
What good can be expected from an unlucky wretch?
فَلاso do not تُمسِكhold يَدَيكَyour two hands عَليهِover it ضَنّاًout of stinginess
فَكَمfor how many لَكَare yours فيin جَهَنَّمَHell مِنof حَصيرِa mat
So do not clutch it in your hands out of stinginess,
So do not be miserly, keep not your hands from it
For many a mat is yours in Hell!
For how many mats await you in hell!
