لَدَيناwith us ياO اِبنَson of إِسماعيلَIsmail قِدرٌa pot
تَفورُboils وَقَهوَةٌand wine صِرفٌunmixed تَدورُcirculates
With us, O son of Ismail, is a pot
We have, O son of Ishmael, a steaming pot
Boiling, while unmixed wine goes round.
Of coffee turning, its aroma swirling.
وَنَدمانٌand a boon companion كَبُستانٍlike a garden نَضيرٍflourishing
بَعيدٍunlikely أَنthat يَكونَthere be لَهُfor it نَظيرُan equal
And a boon companion like a flourishing garden,
And a garden, like a peerless meadow,
Whose equal is scarcely to be found.
Too far for any peer to reach.
وَساقٍand a cupbearer كَالقَضيبِlike the branch الرَطبِsupple لاطٍslender
حَشاهُhis waist وَرِدفُهُand his rump عالٍhigh وَثيرُsoft
And a cupbearer like a supple branch, slender
With legs like moist staffs, smooth,
Of waist, his rump high and soft.
Its hips bountiful, ample, fecund.
وَمُحسِنَةُand a woman skilled in الغِناءِsinging إِذاwhen تَغَنَّتshe sings
حَسِبتَyou would think الأَرضَthe earth مِنfrom طَرَبٍrapture تَسيرُmoves
And a skilled singer: when she sings,
And the songstress, when she sings,
You would think the earth was moving in rapture.
You'd think the earth stirred in rapture.
وَنَحنُand we إِذاًthen عَلىin أَوفىthe fullest سُرورٍjoy

وَإِنand if وافَيتَناyou come to us كَمِلَbecomes complete السُرورُthe joy
And then we are in the fullest joy,
As we, with joy at its perfection-
And if you join us, joy will be complete.
Should you visit, joy would be complete.
فَبادِرso hasten بِالسُرورِto joy عَلىat اِقتِبالِthe beginning of الthe

نَهارِday فَيَومُناfor our day يَومٌa day مَطيرُrainy
So hasten to joy at the beginning of the
So hasten joyfully to meet the morn,
Day, for ours is a rainy day.
For ours a day of gentle rain.
وَقَدand indeed حُجِبَتhas been veiled سِراجُthe lamp of الأُفقِthe horizon فيهِin it
بِدُجنٍby cloud-darkness دونَهاbefore it مِنهُof it سُتورُcurtains
And on this day the horizon's lamp has been veiled
Though the horizon's lamp was veiled
By cloud-darkness, whose curtains lie before it.
In night-clouds, thick, unfurled.
وَوَجهُand the face of الجَوِّthe sky أَربَدُdark gray مُكفَهِرٌّscowling
وَوَجهُand the face of الأَرضِthe earth مُبتَسِمٌsmiling نَضيرُfresh
And the sky's face is dark-gray and scowling,
The sky is chill, frowning, sullen;
And the earth's face is smiling and fresh.
The earth's face smiles, freshly tilled.
وَبَينَهُماand between the two مُقارَعَةٌa clash وَحَربٌand war
لَناfor us مِنهاfrom it السَلامَةَsafety وَالحُبورُand delight
And between them are a clash and a war,
And between the two, skirmish and war
From which we have safety and delight.
From which we're kept secure.
إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle الرَعدُthunder زَمجَرَgrowls خِلتَyou imagine أُسداًlions
غِضاباًangry فيin السَحابِthe clouds لَهاthey have زَئيرُa roar
When thunder growls, you imagine lions
When thunder roared like an angry lion
Angry in the clouds, roaring.
In clouds that rumbled and seethed,
فَإِنthen if سَلَّتunsheathe صَوارِمَهاtheir keen swords الغَواديthe morning clouds
أَفاضَspreads عَلَيهاover her جَوشَنَهاher coat of mail الغَديرُthe pool
Then if the morning clouds unsheathe their keen swords,
And its blades slashed the valleys,
The pool drapes the earth in her coat of mail.
The rushing cloudburst was unleashed.
وَأَعطافُand the curves of الغُصونِthe boughs لَهاthey have نَشاطٌvigor
وَأَنفاسُand the breaths of النَسيمِthe breeze لَهاthey have فُتورُlanguor
And the curves of the boughs are lively,
The branches bent with vitality,
And the breaths of the breeze are languid.
The breaths of breeze subdued.
وَأَزهارُand the flowers of الرِياضِthe gardens لَهاthey have عُيونٌeyes
مُحَدَّقَةٌwide open إِلىtoward الأَفاقِthe horizons صورُturned
And the flowers of the gardens have eyes,
The flowers' eyes in the meadows
Wide open and turned toward the horizons.
Peer out, images of beauty.
وَخَدُّand the cheek of الوَردِthe rose قَدindeed أَضحىhas become نَظيماًstrung together
عَليهِupon it لُؤلُؤُthe pearls of الطَلِّdew النَثيرُscattered
And the rose's cheek: now strung together
And the cheeks of roses blush vermeil
Upon it are the scattered pearls of dew.
On which fine dewdrops trickle.
