The seat of office shines with the radiance of your face,

And the vizierate gains splendor from your majesty.

She saw no worthy match until she saw

Black banners fluttering above your standard.

The anxieties in her breast are stilled; indeed she is seen

Filled with ardent love and longing for you.

Today her seat has brightened, and how often

We beheld it bowed down in sorrow.

She lay in a wasteland; at her flocks howled the

    Wolves, while crows prospered there.

She was restored to you: through you her root stands firm,

Lofty in structure, and through you her branch is leafy.

You are her heirs, to your foes' humiliation,

From of old; anyone else is a pretender falsely affiliated.

Her headstrong steed submitted to you despite its defiance,

And through you her scattered company was reunited.

    فَبِغَيرِ نِعمَةِ طيبِكُم لا تَعبَقُ

    For your glory were the garments of her pride sewn;

Without the blessing of your perfume, they give no fragrance.

O house of al-Muzaffar, in you lordship

Is innate; others merely affect its manners.

One established in lordship, of ancient lineage, is followed

By another of you established in lordship, of ancient lineage.

So religion, since the minister Muhammad became

Its supporting arm, is bright-faced and gladdening.

Through you Islam has become fortified,

With a wall and a moat of your might around it.

You struck the rebels swiftly when they gathered,

And saw how, through strategy, they scattered.

Their assumptions betrayed them on the day of battle,

When they rebelled—not every supposition proves true.

They shot out of the upright faith through their rebellion,

Like an arrow shooting from the belly of the bow.

When they saw you steadier than themselves

In heart, while the horsemen's hearts were pounding,

They turned back in flight, not knowing that

They were quicker to reach death's watering place.

And you passed them round, cups of crimson death,

Whose draught the blue-eyed foe loathed.

So he escaped, while al-Ashrafiyya's breast seethed

Against him, and al-Zaghibiyya's heart was enraged.

The regions of the land cast him out and became

Barred to him; their broad expanses were cramped.

Until the earth seemed the hoop of a ring

In his eyes, and the sky a ceiling sealed shut.

He is terrified if the thought of you occurs to him,

And sees you in his dreams and trembles.

His soul nearly perished beneath the burden of humiliation,

If a soul could perish in adversity.

May the Muslims rejoice in you as a father who, when

They seek refuge in him, tenderly cares for them.

You are the dark cloud; within it are thunderbolts

That strike the foe dead, and within it is abundant rain.

And your palm is like a steady, copious rain,

And the radiance of your face is its gleaming lightning.

Far beyond reach! Your eminence is a slippery height,

Unscalable, and a goal that cannot be attained.

    كَلّا وَلا سَعيُ المُؤَمِّلِ مُخفِقُ

    No hopeful petitioner's honor is neglected in your presence;

No indeed, nor does a hopeful seeker's effort fail.

Our wares sold readily with you; never would

The precious treasures of virtue sell, were it not for you.

So listen to praise fashioned for you, as though it were the

Peerless pearl; all else is patched together.

So trail the flowing hems of happiness, whose days

Never end, and whose freshness never wears out.
