The nights have struck me, through your loss, my brother,

With a shattering blow from their bewildering turns of fate.

My brother, time and its vicissitudes have wronged me through your loss.

So why do you not guard your sanctuary and rise in proud defense?

My brother, do not leave me a target for calamities.

And whenever you cried for help, I would come to you, my refuge.

My brother, after you, it is not my eyelid that savors sleep.

My brother, after you, it is not my life that enjoys a happy prime.

You lie at rest; my capacity to endure your loss is neither ample

Nor spacious, nor is my dread for you relieved.

Before your day of death, I knew my composure to be steadfast:

Whenever people's minds grew flighty, it held firm.

So if I am overcome, I am not to be reproached

On your account; and if I grieve, I am not to be rebuked.

So, O eye, if weeping exhausts your reservoir,

Then pour out blood if tears run short, and gush forth.

For one whose hand was bountiful as rain in drought,

And whose face, like dawn's light, was radiant and proud.

The darkness of the graves has folded away his virtues,

Which, when unfolded among people, drew cries of 'Bravo! Bravo!'

And a soul radiant under the testing of calamities,

Which rose proudly whenever misfortunes bowed it down.

He departed with spotless sleeves, unsullied

By any worldly blemish, and unstained.

His virtues breathe fragrance, so you swear that he

Has steeped himself in musk, though he is unperfumed.

So no lion's paw stole him away from my hand,

Nor did the paw of a dusky, loose-jointed beast snatch him.

But it was death that came between us

Against my will; now he is behind its barrier.
