فَلاso let not يُضجِرَنكَvex you اِزدِحامُthronging الوُفودِthe delegations
فَلا يُضجِرَنكَ اِزدِحامُ الوُفودِ
عَلَيكَaround you وَكَثرَةُand the abundance ماwhat تَبذُلُyou give
عَلَيكَ وَكَثرَةُ ما تَبذُلُ
So do not be vexed by the throng of delegations
Let not the crowds that flock to you annoy,
around you, or by the abundance of what you give.
Nor what you generously expend destroy.
فَإِنَّكَfor indeed you فيin زَمَنٍan age لَيسَthere is not فيهِin it
فَإِنَّكَ في زَمَنٍ لَيسَ فيهِ
جَوادٌa generous man سِواكَother than you وَلاnor مُفضِلُa benefactor
جَوادٌ سِواكَ وَلا مُفضِلُ
For you are in an age in which there is
For in these times so few like you remain
no generous man but you, nor any other benefactor.
To give, or with an open hand sustain.
وَقَدand indeed قَلَّhave grown few فيamong أَهلِهِits people المُنعِمونَthe benefactors
وَقَد قَلَّ في أَهلِهِ المُنعِمونَ
وَقَدand indeed كَثُرَhave grown many البائِسُthe wretched المُرمِلُthe penniless
وَقَد كَثُرَ البائِسُ المُرمِلُ
And benefactors among its people have grown few,
Munificent men are few and far between,
and the wretched, penniless people have grown many.
While indigent and needy throngs are seen.
وَماand not فيهِin it غَيرُكَother than you مَنanyone who يُستَماحُis asked for bounty
وَما فيهِ غَيرُكَ مَن يُستَماحُ
وَماand not فيهِin it إِلّاكَexcept you مَنanyone who يُسأَلُis petitioned
وَما فيهِ إِلّاكَ مَن يُسأَلُ
And no one in it but you is asked for bounty,
None but yourself is looked to for relief,
and no one in it but you is petitioned.
On none but you is cast the shame of grief.
