She passed through Jam‘ on the night of departure,

    bringing sin and reward together.

    A tawny beauty, radiant, slender-waisted,

    bright of breast and throat.

She passed, swaying gently among her companions,

like a star among the shining stars.

Roused from repose was my passion for her

by her approach at the hour of departure.

I gained nothing from her but a glance

that I stole from beside her curtained retreat.

She gestured a greeting, while her companions

    cast sidelong looks at us.

And many a night my companion was

a fair woman guarded by dusky spears.

Ah, for her, for the coolness of her saliva,

weak of pledge and slender of waist!

The drunkenness of love and youth swayed her

as the east wind bends a fresh branch.

She spent the night offering me the fruit of her saliva,

garden of youth, smiling of mouth!

and they have always banded against the free.

    runs contrary to theirs?

then rose in the morning prosperous and wealthy!

And many a man fallen into the depths of the dust

was borne by fortune aloft beside the eagle.

like the alternation of flood and ebb.

that raises my standing or my worth.

You are my reserve, and I see that I am

more in need of a reserve than ever.

And know that I have sworn by

the dawn, and the Lord of the even and the odd,

and the ten nights, Mount Tur, and

the seven oft-repeated verses, and also the afternoon,

and al-Safa, the House, the Corner, and

the kissed Black Stone, and the Hijr,

that if you do not restore me, I shall turn with

firm resolve upon your overflowing bounty.

And tell him, if he gloats over me,

delighting—may he never delight—in my suffering:

    Enough! The days keep changing,

and time is full of deception and guile.

Its nights ravaged the lord of Ghumdan,

and destroyed the brother of al-Khidr.

Abu ‘Ali, you gather the fruits of

virtue, and are the ravager of wealth.

Let no one stand in sun beyond your favors' shade

who has spent the night poor beneath your shade.

And unveil bounty for a travelling woman

from the west, who has come to you in a book,

offspring of virtue, who has come

to seek shelter beneath your towering mountain,

among lovely, chaste maidens who grew

    old unwed behind protection and veiling;

noble women, on whom nothing decreed

unwed aging except the lack of a bridegroom.

So unveil her as a virgin—how many before her

virgin sisters of hers are already with you!

A palace figurine, whose equal no

discerning critic sees among palace figurines.

If magic could be charmed by her like,

her meanings would be magic's incantations.

Nothing turns the miser from her

beauty except excessive asking prices and cost.

None is seen meaner than a suitor

    who contests a virgin's dowry.

Yet despite her great excellence, she is

a wick brought before a full moon.

Her place beside his merit is that of

a drop he casts into a sea.

I directed her to Egypt—an inept act by one

    who sends wheat to Egypt!

A stricken man's breath, through which is sought

ample room for thought and for the breast.

He seeks no recompense from you for it

    except restraining the wicked debtor.

May you ever have glory's edge honed, feared

for your might, your command obeyed.
